The December issue of the Vienna Musikverein magazine contains an article entitled “The Lied -England’s Liking for Lied Singing”, which contains a paragraph relating to Simon. The original German text and English translation are given below:
The Lied – Englands Faible für den Liedgesang
Man spricht in England ausdrücklich von „The Lied“ um das deutsche Kunstlied zu bezeichnen – besonders gilt das Faible „The Romantic Lied“. In einer großen Tradition stehen so auch zwei Wiener Recitals mit Sängern aus England und ihren britischen Duopartnern: Sir Simon Keenlyside und Graham Johnson gastieren im Zyklus Liederabende ……
Gelebte Tradition
Für dieses legendäre Niveau gibt es auch heute noch Garanten. Der Britische Bariton Sir SK, ein Superstar mittlerweile der Oper, hat sich bezeichnenderweise durch das deutsche romantische Lied überhaupt erst an die Oper herangesungen und nicht zuletzt deshalb dort den sublimen Zugriff auf das Metier entwickelt. Als Vermittler des romantischen Liedes war er trainiert, die Liedästhetik nicht durch Darstellung zu verstören: „ never ever overdone“ – ein durchaus britisches Ideal.

Two recitals in Vienna with singers from England and their British accompanists stand in this great tradition: Sir Simon Keenlyside and Graham Johnson are two of the guest performers in the song recitals cycle……
Living Tradition
There are still guarantors of this legendary level today. The British baritone Simon Keenlyside, whilst a superstar of the opera, tellingly enough first came to opera through the German romantic Lied – and not least because of this he developed his sublime grasp on this métier. As a performer of the romantic Lied, he was trained not to disturb the aesthetics of the song by his acting: “never ever overdone” – a thoroughly British ideal.”
